Skull Crochet from Spider Mambo Designs.

Recently, I sat down for a chat with Laurie Kahn of Spider Mambo Designs.  I shared a photo of her creepy skull slouch hat on our Facebook page a little while back, and it turned out to be one of the most popular posts we’ve ever made, so I wanted to give everyone the chance to learn a little more about her and her work.  You can also follow her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/spidermambo or visit her at any of these other links.  Her patterns are available for sale, often for nothing more than a dollar!

Why “Spider Mambo”?  Where did that name come from?

Well I loosely connected the fact that spiders spin webs, and the stitches I make. Their movements while constructing their webs are like an aerial  ballet.  I wanted to use Spider Ballet, but no, that didn’t relate to sugar skulls. So I made the connection  with Latin dances….and picked Mambo.

How long have you been doing this, and how did you get started?

I have been crocheting since I was 8. Mom taught me….and soon I was off and creating my own little stuffed animals.  She started to wonder what I was filling them with. I can tell you she wasn’t too happy when she found out I had been taking the stuffing out of my mattress.

Which of your designs or creations is your personal favorite?

The creepy skull slouch hat. Little did I know at the time how popular it was gong to be with both men and women. It wasn’t until Ann Mancinni from Glamour4You made it up in different color stripes and posted it on my page in Ravelry did it take off. The original is the rose pink.

My second favorite is a winged skull shawl I titled Azreal, The Angel of Death. It depicts the death angel transporting souls to heaven.

I’m guessing that Halloween is your favorite holiday?

It is Halloween every day at my house.

Would it be fair to say that you are obsessed with skulls?

Yes, I confess to that observation. It  started by going with what was popular. I was making fused glass pendants, and tried out a few skulls which sold very well. Photo collage came next because of artist trading cards. Then I started to see crochet skulls….and remembered I knew how to crochet.

When you are out and about, are you dressed from head to toe in your own crocheted work?

Surprisingly, no. Although It would be really good advertising, I am just a jeans and t shirt kind a gal. I did wear a creepy skull hat once going out to pick up a sub sandwich on Halloween.

I see that you have designed more than a few items for pets.  Do you have any pets yourself?

I have creepy skull dog sweaters on the drawing board. Although our love child a 150 pound Pyrenees/Newfoundland mix, Rocky is too hairy to need a sweater. When I open the door, Salesmen take one look  and go running down the street.
